4 Tips for Winter Hair Hydration
The winter weather notoriously dries out skin, hair, and nails due to the cooler temperatures and lack of humidity stripping away hydration. To protect your hair for the season ahead, take proactive steps now to give your hair the moisture boost it needs to stay healthy and weather any conditions. Use this helpful guide to make the necessary changes to your current hair care routine.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
The dry cold of the winter months leaves your hair parched, so it’s wise to adjust your water intake accordingly. Don’t shy away from drinking a couple extra glasses of water each day, especially if you’ve spent more time outside than usual. And wear a hat or hood whenever you can to add another protective barrier between the cool elements and your tresses.
2. Cool Down Shower Temperatures
While the chilling temperatures of autumn and winter might tempt you to turn up the heat on your daily showers or baths, it comes with a price. The hot water strips away all of the moisture and natural oils in your hair that keep it fresh and glowing. Plus, the drying results can lead to serious scalp irritation. Switch to lukewarm water and see how you can get the desired effect of warmth without the damaging results. Better yet, consider finishing with a quick blast of cool water to seal in hydration, especially on your ends.
3. Read Ingredients Lists
It’s easy to take a brand’s word for what they say their product does. However, the ingredient list can’t lie. If you see tons of chemicals, harsh sulfates, and other alcohol-based products, then the products will only further dry out and damage your hair from root to tip. This can happen with any product, but be especially mindful of these ingredients in shampoos. You need a purifying shampoo that does the job of cleansing and detoxifying without stripping your hair of the moisture it needs.
4. Use Conditioner, Masks, & Treatments Religiously
In conjunction with all of the previous steps, the key to restoring and retaining moisture is conditioning products. Your daily hair care routine should include a highly nourishing conditioner. And on a weekly basis (or every few days) be sure to incorporate hydration-boosting hair masks and restorative hair oils. The smoothing and softening products will provide silky soft results and prevent winter hair static.
With so much to look forward to in the winter, don’t let damaged hair get in the way. Take control now and see the stunning results that come when you take action now.
